How do we market our new album? Part 8

We’ve now had about 250 downloads of Barbary Lion from Bandcamp. Incidentally, there’s been a marked increase in downloads of all our previous releases too, which I assume is people downloading them at the same time. Having clear opportunity to access back catalogue while acquiring a current release seems to be a good thing.

In the last week we’ve become aware that literally dozens of websites are offering Barbary Lion as a ‘free’ download. These are actually sites that are fronts for file sharing sites and when you try to get the free download, there is a lot of hard sell for the file sharing site’s services before you even get close to a free download. Here are a couple of examples:

Our Creative Commons licences do not allow commercial use of our music. However, I guess these scammers would claim that people have the option of getting the files free and that, in fact, they don’t host the files themselves. I guess it’s better that our music is getting out there than not.

I also read this week on the BBC news website about a new filesharing service launched by two of the founders of Piratebay, with claims it would all be legal and obey copyright law. It’s called Bayfiles and you can find a direct download of Barbary Lion HERE.

We’ve been hunting on Google for bass music blogs and sending the album and some marketing blurb to likely candidates. Many of them have SoundCloud dropboxes which makes life easy. We’ll see what comes of it.

We found a short entry on a Russian blog about Barbary Lion: Eduard Nasyrov. As we don’t speak Russian, we tried Babelfish translation. It gave us this:

good heavy [dramstep] [brekbit]. the amateurs of [zharna] accurately [zachenyat]. and those who not by sign – as the minimum they will be X-rayed about existence of this offshoot. pleasantly it [slushat].[zachet

I look forward to being X-rayed about existence of this offshoot!
