Another artist leaves Spotify
We’ve said right from the start that Spotify is a nothing but the tired, old, dying mainstream music industry dressing itself up as a player in the new digital economy but actually being at least as bad for musicians and small labels as the old world ever was. Many indie labels have already pulled all their stock from Spotify because of the staggeringly low levels of royalties paid.
Today, we hear that Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has pulled his solo songs and those with his group Atoms For Peace from Spotify, complaining that “new artists get paid fuck all with this model”.
Producer Nigel Godrich said: “The music industry is being taken over by the back door. And if we don’t try and make it fair for new music producers and artists, then the art will suffer. Make no mistake. These are all the same old industry bods trying to get a stranglehold on the delivery system.”
Thom Yorke said: “Make no mistake, new artists you discover on Spotify will not get paid. Meanwhile shareholders will shortly be rolling in it. Simples.”
