War on Terra – promoting our release 4
Facebook is an amazing tool for small record labels and independent artists. Never before has it been so easy to have direct interaction with fans or potential fans of our music. If you’re a musicain with a Facebook page, you’ll have noticed that only a relatively small percentage of people who have ‘liked’ your page actually see your updates, which does beg the question ‘why bother?’.
Some people are currently mistaken about this being a new development; no, Facebook has always used Edge Ranking on its pages but only recently has it been showing you how many people have seen your posts.
Anyway – for the moment I refuse to pay extra for more people to see posts. I’d rather take a punt on a paid advert. We’ve done it before with small but just-about-worth-it levels of success.
My £20 advert this time was seen by 137,637 people in the UK, USA and Canada. This led to 59 of them clicking on the advert to go through to our Bandcamp page, where War on Terra is available on a pay-what-you-like basis.
During the advert’s week-long run, 10 copies were downloaded. Two people chose to pay (God bless ’em!) and we made £11.50. Some of that will no doubt be deducted by Bandcamp. Actually, we don’t even know if those downloads were connected with the advert anyway – we had a steady but low rate of downloads happening anyway. Incidentally, we’ve now reached the dizzying total of 201 downloads. Another hit album!
It’s a good thing we don’t rely on music sales for a living!
