War on Terra – promoting our release 3

November 6, 2012

I wrote previously that I would be blogging about progress with our recent release, War on Terra.

We’ve now seen 185 downloads but only eight of those were to people who chose to pay. That’s quite a difference from the previous few releases, where we initially had about 10% of people paying, although it would drop off quite quickly after that.

What I’m not sure about is whether this is indicative of further changes in our culture’s music acquisition habits, or if it a natural and predictable reaction to the fact that I pushed hard on the ‘free’ aspect of the album in most of my online marketing. Perhaps that was an error…

Anyway, I’m not sure what to do next. I’ve sent it to lots of blogs, online magazines etc and have generally been ignored as always.

We have, of course, made an ideologically driven choice to operate in the world of Creative Commons licensed music and to remain stubbornly unfashionable in our exploration of non-mainstream musical genres, so it could be argued that we only have ourselves to blame for our ongoing obscurity.

I have a fantasy that in twenty years’ time, someone will discover our music in the depths of the interweb, love what they hear and then be ecstatic to find our almost endless back catalogue of releases waiting for them. Kind of like when we discovered Bill Laswell‘s music.
