Music is halal……not!!!

August 5, 2010

Music fails to chime with Islamic values, says Iran’s supreme leader according to The Guardian.

Ali Khamenei

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has responded to a request for a ruling by a 21-year-old follower of his, who was thinking of starting music lessons, but wanted to know if they were acceptable according to Islam. Khamenei said: ‘Although music is halal, promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic. It’s better that our dear youth spend their valuable time in learning science and essential and useful skills and fill their time with sport and healthy recreations instead of music.’

Well, as The Clash once said:

By order of the prophet
We ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out
The electric kettle drum
The local guitar picker
Got his guitar picking thumb
As soon as the shareef
Had cleared the square
They began to wail

The shareef don’t like it
Rockin’ the Casbah
Rock the Casbah
The shareef don’t like it
Rockin’ the Casbah
Rock the Casbah

….and here’s the best cover of the song by Rachid Taha:

Rachid Taha – Rock El Casbah
