Tom Jones’s email

July 16, 2010

Gnarled old Welsh singer Tom Jones has denied that a leaked email from his record label which criticisies his new gospel and blues album was a publicity stunt.

On hearing Praise & Blame, Island Records executive David Sharpe says he was surprised to hear hymns being played in Island Records’ office. He says: ‘My initial pleasure came to an abrupt halt when I realised that Tom Jones was singing the hymns! I have just listened to the album in its entirety and want to know if this is some sick joke???’. He continues: ‘We did not invest a fortune in an established artist for him to deliver 12 tracks from the common book of prayer.

Apart from the fact that artists like Tom Jones have long history of recording gospel-orientated songs because they share the same musical roots as soul, blues and rock’n’roll, the record company idiot seems to have missed the point that they have invested nothing in Tom Jones. All money spent on artists working within traditional record label contracts is recoupable from the artist’s share of the royalties. It’s merely a loan.
