Portishead want your advice

February 18, 2009

Portishead, ultracool West Country triphop ubermaestros, have announced that they are now ‘free agents’, having completed their three record deal with Island Records. The band is looking at new ways to sell their music and want some advice from fans:

‘With the world being the way it is there are lots of options open……but if you lot have any bright ideas of how we should sell our music in the future let us know – why not? I dont think that we’re into giving our music away for free to be honest. It takes ages to write and we have to heat our swimming pools…..!!!’

Yeah, Portishead are definiteky going to benefit from doing it their own way. Like all “uber cool” groups their fans will follow them, and buy their offerings regardless.

I love all this, I think it is so cool – it’s more rock’n’roll than rock’n’roll can dream of being nowadays

Just think… a couple more years people will be photocopying their own fanzines and pressing their own 7″ singles…..
    …no wait, this isn’t 1976…

The philosophy was there in ’76 but not the means. The Sex Pistols, despite all their alleged ‘rebellion’, still had to sign with a label and distributor to be heard. Now, of course, you CAN press up a 7 or 12, make CDs, upload mp3s or FLACs or WAVs, promote yourself as much as you like. The punk philosophy (Here’s three chords, now form a band) is actually realisable now.
