MySpace signs deals with independent labels and distributors

January 30, 2009

MySpace has arranged deals with five important independent labels and distributors: Nettwork Music Group, INgrooves, IRIS Distribution, RoyaltyShare and Wind-Up Records (which is actually part of Sony Music Entertainment).

There’s been talk for a while about MySpace starting a paid download service, which would probably be good for artists like Secret Archives of the Vatican. Maybe this is the start of it developing. I wish they’d set something up for dealing with artists directly, though, instead of distributors; this simply perpetuates the old, dying, music business model, however ‘independent’ they claim to be.
